First time client
This was my first salon experience and it was amazing. Jeffrey cut and did hi-lites to my hair and I felt beautiful. Laura did my facial and my face never felt so clean. Joshua did a Swedish Massage that was to die for. When it was over I felt like I just woke up from the best nap ever. I'm so glad my husband bought me that gift certificate. It was so worth it and I'll recommend Indigo to everyone.

Best Massage Ever!
I just moved back to SD and found myself faced with the search for a good massage therapist. I've gotten massage nearly every week for years and I have had all kinds. I was very happy when Joshua gave me the best massage I've had yet! I am very impressed also with the rest of the staff who all went out of their way to make me comfortable. Thank you!

Great Special Occassion Hair
5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended
12/21/2006 Posted by notasurfer
Jeffrey did my hair for a wedding I was in this past summer, and it was spectacular. everyone at the wedding was asking who had done it, and I got so many complements. I also had a pedicure here for the wedding, and it was not that great. uncomfortable chairs, and they used one of those portable plastic foot baths. Eh. But the hair was awesome!

Wonderful Service and Very Friendly
By: Anonymous (3/3/2008)
I needed to get away for a day and this was definitely the place to go. I had a wonderful massage by Joia and followed it up with a styling and hair cut by Jim. I had probably the best experience I have ever had at a spa. I left there feeling rejuvenated and looking great all for a very reasonable price too.

Indigo Home in Hillcrest is awesome!
By: Janelle (2/13/2008)
Indigo is so rad because it's a converted house in Hillcrest...for being a house, the place is actually pretty spacious...I love their great decor and the entire ambiance of the salon...I was surprised that the haircuts weren't overly expensive either.

Great service
By: Janice L. (07/07/05)
Really great service. The whole experience was very relaxing. They offer fairly good priced spa packages to choose from. They really care a lot about the mind and body in relation to overall health as well. I was even able learn a little from them. Very quaint, the atmosphere is amazing.

Awesome and Expensive
By: Erin M. (09/14/06)
This is a full-service salon in San Diego good for an indulgence day. It is really expensive, but the prices for hair services are tiered based on the experience of your hairdresser. I have only gone to the lowest level stylist and it still is pretty good. I was given the “Enlightenment” package for a Christmas gift and it was awesome! The massage therapist was wonderful and relaxing, and the best part about their spa gifts are that you can choose from the services, even once the gift is purchased. http://www.insiderpages.com/b/3710490034

Yelp! - Real People Real Reviews
Indigo is an adorable little salon that sits in a converted house on a quiet street in Hillcrest. The vibe is spa-like with a relaxed, Hillcrest twist: they will offer you cucumber water and give you a hand massage, but there is rad music and the employees are laid-back, tattooed and cheerful. The setting is awesome: the majority of the house's interior walls have been knocked out to make room for hair booths, and along the side of the house is a sun-drenched yoga studio. Upstairs, they do facials, waxing and massage. Go see Abby for the best cut and color of your life, topped off with a tingling scalp massage. The prices are reasonable and the results -- fab, fab hair -- are beyond worth it.

- Indigo Home
for Hair and Body: An Island Oasis Urbanites
By
Kirsten Noelle Hubbard
May 1, 2007
Hillcrest’s hippest spa and salon, Indigo Home for Hair and Body, is
surprisingly serene. You might assume a spa that boasts an Australian core
with Asian flair might be a bit too globally eclectic for a spa-going stress
case, seeking cultural escape. However, Aussie owner Glenn Southgate’s
vision gracefully manifests as an island oasis for San Diego urbanites.
A path of exotic flowers and towering palm trees allures guests to the glass
doors of Southgate’s haven. Upon entrance, bold colors accent clean Eastern-inspired
décor, leaving the mind at once focused and at ease. The interior truly
reflects the Aussie owner’s mantra. Southgate is proud to portray a no-attitude
attitude. The beauticians work purely because they enjoy their craft, and customers
visit because they value it?egos are left at the door.
Indigo’s laid-back Aussie basics mixed with Eastern Zen elements result
in a truly original menu of spa and salon treatments. The Indigo pre-designed
packages best illuminate the distinction. The Nirvana package is a four-hour
long treatment comprised of an Indigo Signature facial for 90 minutes, a Circulatory
massage for 90 minutes, and your choice of three finishing touches. The optional
touches include a bikini wax, brow and lip wax, deep conditioning treatment,
make-up application, and many more. The Indigo way: keep it simple, make it
your own.

944 - Indigo Home for Hair & Body
Indigo Home for Hair & Body differs from the typical day spa, placing
more emphasis on spirituality. The names of the treatments, such as Harmony,
Zen and Nirvana, illustrate Indigos hallmark of nurturing the spirit. This
spas motto, Welcome Home, is the perfect way to describe this urban oasis.
Beginning with a team of hair stylists who dream of helping people reach their
full potential, Indigos commitment has lead to a strong bond with their clients
and the surrounding community. Indigo also offers five different facials ranging
from the Express facial (the perfect introductory treatment) to the more intense
Glycolic Series (six 90 minute treatments that use glycolic acid to increase
the moisture and recharge the life of your skin). The stone treatment is also
a unique procedure in San Diego. The combination of warm basalt stones and
cool marbles is the perfect way to rejuvenate your self. Whether youre looking
to stimulate your body or mind, Indigo Home for Hair & Body promises to
be an enticing experience.

a few). Top this off with a price list that still allows you to afford
those new Manolos you’ve had your eye on, and

design their packages and services to improve your health, beauty and well
being-while keeping your bank account plentiful. Almost sounds too good to

Glenn Southgate Brings A New Perspective to Local Image
By Melissa Wirkus
July 1, 2005
Nestled in a lush garden surrounded by palm trees and flowering plants stands
Indigo Hair Salon and Day Spa, appearing as an oasis amidst the concrete jungle
of Downtown San Diego. The relaxing vibe found at Indigo is not only given
off by the façade of the building, but continues throughout the simply
decorated salon proudly owned by Australian native Glenn Southgate. Southgate’s
warm and friendly personality makes it no wonder why his staff of 30 and committed
clientele seem so delighted to be at the spa and salon.
Southgate left Australia in his early-‘20s with no plans
that involved blow dryers or massage tables. “I never expected to own
a hair salon,” Southgate says. “It all just kept growing and evolving.” San
Diego was just supposed to be a stopover during his travels, but 20 years and
two salons later, he definitely is a California type of guy.
Southgate was introduced to hairdressing by his ex-wife and thought
it would be an interesting field of work to get into. After a two-year apprenticeship
with a Del Mar hairdresser, Southgate was well on his way to becoming the hair
legend he is today. The success of Indigo is probably due in part to Southgate’s “no-attitude” motto
which he says sets him apart from some of the other egotistical and primadonna
hairdressers in the industry. “People are happy doing their work here,” Southgate
says about his staff. “Happy technicians translate into a wonderful energy.”
This wonderful energy that Southgate describes, is no doubt an
ever-present part of the salon. From the hairdressers downstairs to the masseurs
upstairs, the staff at Indigo seems just as happy to be a part of the salon
as Southgate does. “This is a great career for young people — careers
that are few and far between.”
Describing the atmosphere of the salon as, "down-to-earth
and homey,” Southgate says Indigo is not only a place to renew and relax,
but to also view artwork from local artists. Every few months, Southgate displays
a new artist's work at his cozy salon. “It is like a new, fresh coat
of paint every time a client comes in,” he says. “Each artist brings
a new feel to the salon; it keeps things fresh."
Indigo also transforms into an art haven every now and then,
as Southgate hosts art shows right in his own salon. The unique lighting system
equipped with dimmers really bring the art to life. “We have a killer
sound system that really gets it rockin’ and rollin’,” Southgate
adds.
Since most clients come in about every six to eight weeks, Southgate
says the artwork gives them something new to look at in addition to the Eastern-inspired
décor. “There is a very visual stimulating architectural element
to the salon. The minimalistic, no-clutter approach Southgate uses in the interior
design helps to reinforce the relaxing and self-centering elements the spa
focuses on.”

Five Star Reviews
In a relatively quite block of downtown San Diego sits Indigo Hair Salon and
Day Spa. Committed to relaxing the mind, balancing the body and nurturing the
spirit, Indigo is an absolute haven for anybody in need of escaping the "less
than pampering" aspects of modern life.
The moment you begin scaling the stairs to the Day Spa on Indigo's second floor
you feel yourself being transported to a place of serenity, isolated from the
rest of the world. Warm lighting, soothing sounds and asian decor make you instantly
feel at peace.
The perfect introduction to Indigo's spa services would have to be the Nirvana
Package, which consists of 4 hours of bliss including a signature facial, signature
massage and three finishing touches (choose from a shampoo blow dry, scalp treatment,
15 minute foot reflexology or make up application).
The Indigo Signature Facial takes the standard facial that we all need and brings
it to a new level by including an eye-zone treatment and scalp massage. Your
face never felt so good!
The Indigo Signature Massage is a customized treatment which can focus on elements
of circulatory/Swedish and deep tissue/sports techniques, including pressure
point, energy work, skin rolling and essential oils. However you customize your
treatment, you will be hard-pressed to find a more thorough massage experience.
The Hair Salon occupies the entire first floor of Indigo and offers a wide
array of services. Staffed with an extraordinary team of stylists, The Indigo
Hair Salon specializes in haircutting, color, straightening and even special-occasion
styling and proudly features AVEDA hair care products.

Vision Magazine - Days of Indigo
by Kendra Richard
I've found it! Nestled in a quiet area of Hillcrest rests the
ultimate urban oasis. Upon entering, the bold colors painted on the walls stimulate
the senses, while colorful abstract art by Sally Christiensen reminds you to
leave the routine of your daily grind at the door. Indigo Home for Hair and
Body is the perfect mix of hip and Zen, bold and peaceful. The energy of scissors
and blow-dryers abounds, but waiting just behind a closed door lies the welcome
sanctuary of their day spa.
Having been the blessed recipient of Indigo's Harmony Package
($175) I was treated to the most healing one hour massage I have ever experienced.
Trained hands read my body like a map, traveling precisely to those areas of
tension along my spine and in my neck. The soft music of quiet drums and soothing
chants helped the massage therapist lure me into a state of deep relaxation,
making the massage a truly healing treatment.
Wrapped in a soft robe, I was then led into another immaculate
room where the Essential Facial was performed. Indigo uses Aveda and Dermalogica
in their facials, allowing all types of skin to be treated by the perfect skincare
line.
Just when you think you've reached your beauty threshold, Indigo
treats you to a finishing touch-your choice of blow dry and style or make-up
application so as not to make the boss suspicious when you arrive back at work
with that luminous glow only two and a half hours at the spa can create.
After my blow-dry and style, I left Indigo with a spring in my
step to match the bounce in my hair, and a smile on my face to match the balance
of my being. As I stepped beyond the bamboo borders of my newfound oasis, I
knew the sounds and colors of the city would try to envelop me once again,
but the only color I saw was Indigo.

Renew Magzine - Harmonious Convergence
Their journeys began on opposite hemispheres. But the paths that led Australian-born
Glenn Southgate, owner of Indigo Salon and Day Spa, and his lead esthetician
Suzy Robbins, an El Paso, Texas native, to southern California converged
at a tranquil retreat, where balance and simplicity delight clients everyday.
Southgate, who left Australia at 21 to travel the world in search
of himself, didn’t exactly plan on heading up a 5,600-square-foot salon/day
spa. He says he simply kept his mind and his eyes open and let it evolve. And
eventually it did, with much success.
"I wanted to create something that would make people feel good,
because I was searching for that myself,” says Southgate, who recently
retired from hairdressing, after 18 years to concentrate on the business side
of Indigo. “You have to focus on every detail of customer service and
really care about what you’re doing in order for people to respond in
a powerful way.”
Southgate’s journey brought him to the U.S. for what was
planned to be a temporary stopover. While visiting San Diego, he met his future
wife, who introduced him to the industry while she was in beauty school. Though
their relationship ultimately didn’t stand the test of time, Southgate
found his calling in hairdressing.
In 1998, Southgate opened Indigo Home for Hair and Body. Shortly
thereafter, he hired Suzy Robbins, who has lived in San Diego for 14 years.
Robbins who started her career as a make-up artist and has been a skin care
therapist for five years, says she immediately felt welcome at Indigo.
"I’ve worked at places where you feel like you’ve
got to tip toe around your boss. But Glenn makes the employees feel like we
are all on the same level. I have no problem talking to him about anything
and everything,” says Robbins, who admits her introverted personality
often kept her from opening up to previous employers.
The feeling is mutual, according to Southgate, who describes
Robbins as the perfect example of an employee who understands his vision for
Indigo. Suzy is a very sweet woman and very focused on her clients,” says
Southgate. “Her growth has been amazing. I have the utmost respect for
her.”
Southgate also has a tremendous amount of respect for simplicity
and balance, which he has diligently incorporated into Indigo. From the peaceful,
Eastern-themed décor to the personable customer service and hands-on
management style, Southgate prides himself on helping his clients and employees
connect mind, body and spirit.
"I don’t like a lot of clutter. I like things to be balanced
and proportional, as are most of the Eastern philosophies, so visually that’s
what we created. But there’s a whole other energetic side of Indigo that
comes from people being happy in the environment,” he says.
That energy is generated by Southgate’s desire to inspire
and encourage clients and employees to take every opportunity to grow as individuals.
One way be brings a fresh perspective to Indigo is by supporting local artists
with rotating art exhibits.
"Each artist brings a whole new energy to Indigo. You have to
keep evolving. The more you learn, the more you realize what you got to learn.
That’s the beautiful thing about life.
Southgate’s philosophy is appreciated by his staff of
25, as well as his clients—many of whom are 18-year customers.
"Clients walk into Indigo and feel as though they are coming
home,” says Robins. “And all the employees are friendly and comfortable
with one another. I feel fortunate to really enjoy going to work everyday.”
Suzy Robbin's rituals for renewal
-Relaxing in her comfortable home on the beach
-Spending time with loved ones
-Enjoying a rejuvenating massage
Glenn Southgate: 6 things I can't live without
-Yoga—he turned his small garage into a yoga studio and practices at
least once a day
-Loved ones—his children, family and staff
-Integrity—“If we love through our lives with integrity and respect
for one another, it can be an amazing experience.”
-Music
-Food and wine
-Clients—“I really enjoy the relationships and interaction I have
with our customers.”
In our rooms
-The Elements: Earth, Fire, Music, Love. For
Southgate, life is about balance, and his treatment rooms are
no exception. In them he creates nurturing spaces of simplistic
proportion.
-Earth: Each rooms features a series of black-and-white
semi-nudes photographed against a seascape.
-Fire: Softly lit candles exude warmth and comfort.
_Music: As a former musician, music has always
been a big part of Southgate’s life. At Indigo, melodic
tunes contribute to the tranquility.
-Love: A combination of relaxing treatments
and nurturing spa professionals leave people barely able to walk
after being pampered at Indigo, says Southgate. “The estheticians
and massage therapists really enjoy what they do. That makes
for a pretty powerful effect.”
-Dermalogica products: “Dermalogica is
a wonderfully supportive company. And, they offer incredible
education. If you accept what they share with you, it’s
hard not to be successful,” says Southgate.
